Black Men Deserve Rest, Too: Why Wellness Spaces for Black Men Matter

Black Men’s Wellness Retreats: Why Rest, Brotherhood & Community Matter

For many Black men, strength is something that has been expected of them long before they ever had the opportunity to define it for themselves. Strength can look like providing, protecting, pushing through, showing up for everyone else and carrying responsibility without complaint.

But what happens when strength leaves no room for rest? When being the person everyone depends on makes it difficult to admit that you are tired, overwhelmed, uncertain or simply in need of care yourself?

At Hotel Sages, we believe wellness should make room for all of it. Not every form of strength requires force. Sometimes strength requires stillness, vulnerability and allowing yourself to be supported. Sometimes, it looks like getting on a plane to Bali, putting down what you carry at home and giving yourself permission to exhale.

Why Black Men’s Wellness Deserves Its Own Conversation

Wellness has become a global industry, but who feels represented within it still matters. Scroll through images of wellness retreats and you will see yoga, meditation, spa treatments and beautiful destinations. What you may see less often are groups of Black men being intentionally centered in those spaces.

Wellness is about more than massages and meditation. It can include mental and emotional well-being, movement, sleep, stress management, community, connection and having spaces where you feel comfortable enough to put down your guard.

Research on Black men’s mental health has identified barriers to seeking support that can include expectations surrounding masculinity and self-reliance, stigma, mistrust of healthcare systems and difficulty finding culturally responsive care. It has also pointed to the importance of social support and community.

For us, that raised an important question: What could wellness look like when Black men are not simply included, but intentionally centered?

In 2026, we had the opportunity to find out.

From a Dream to a Black Men’s Wellness Retreat in Bali

When we acquired Hotel Sages, our vision was always bigger than creating a beautiful place to stay. We wanted to create a sanctuary where people could arrive carrying everything life had placed on them and, even if only for a few days, set some of it down.

As Black women and the owners of Hotel Sages, we also understood the importance of seeing yourself reflected in spaces where you are being asked to be vulnerable. We dreamed of one day creating an experience specifically for Black men.

Not another guys’ trip or a packed itinerary designed to keep everyone entertained from morning until night. We envisioned something deeper: a space where Black men could experience Bali, prioritize their wellness, build community, have honest conversations and explore a different relationship with rest.

In partnership with Black Menswear, that vision became a reality when we welcomed Black men from across the world to Hotel Sages for our first Black Men’s Wellness Retreat.

What Happens When Rest Becomes Part of the Itinerary?

The men arrived with different stories, careers, responsibilities and life experiences. They were entrepreneurs, fathers, husbands, creatives, professionals and leaders. For the week, however, none of those titles needed to come first.

The retreat created room for something many adults rarely schedule into their lives: space. Space to breathe, move, laugh, connect and talk about things men may not always have the opportunity to discuss with one another.

Throughout the experience, wellness and adventure existed side by side. The men experienced yoga, breathwork, sound healing, massage and intentional conversations while also exploring Bali, sharing meals, laughing and simply enjoying being in community.

That balance was important because wellness does not have to look one way.

You don’t have to meditate every morning, be able to touch your toes or know anything about breathwork or sound healing to participate. For one person, wellness might mean waking up for yoga. For another, it could be sitting beside the pool doing absolutely nothing. It might be a massage, a conversation with someone who understands you, trying something unfamiliar, turning your phone off or finally getting a full night of sleep.

Wellness can be quiet, but it can also be joyful. It can look like brotherhood, adventure, play, movement and connection.

The Power of Brotherhood and Being Seen

One of the most meaningful parts of the retreat wasn’t any individual activity. It was the community that formed around them.

There is something powerful about entering a space and realizing you don’t have to explain every part of your experience before someone can understand you. That doesn’t mean every Black man shares the same story, but intentional spaces can create opportunities for people with shared experiences to connect without minimizing parts of themselves.

Meals became conversations. Activities became shared experiences. Strangers became friends. And when one person chose to be honest, it sometimes gave someone else permission to do the same.

During the retreat, we witnessed moments of vulnerability between men that were incredibly powerful, not because vulnerability replaced strength, but because vulnerability became another expression of it.

Rest Is Not Something You Have to Earn

But what if caring for yourself wasn’t reserved for the moment when your body or mind finally forced you to stop?

Many high-performing people know one version of rest very well: work until you are exhausted, finish the project, hit the goal, take care of everyone else, and then allow yourself a break.

Rest becomes the reward for productivity.

For Black men, conversations about wellness can intersect with expectations around toughness, independence and being able to handle things alone. Expanding our definition of strength doesn’t mean abandoning those qualities. It means making room for something more.

Strength can include knowing when you need rest. It can include community, asking for support and taking care of yourself before you reach empty.

Why Bali?

Stepping outside of your normal environment can create a powerful opportunity to reconnect with yourself, and Bali offers a natural separation from the pace and responsibilities of everyday life. Movement, nature, nourishing food, spirituality and wellness practices are woven throughout the island.

At Hotel Sages, our intimate setting in Canggu gives groups a place to retreat while still having access to everything that makes Bali such an extraordinary destination. Days might begin with movement in the yoga shala, include a massage or time in our Recovery Center, and end with conversations beside the pool. There can be a floating sound bath one day and an adventure across the island the next.

Most importantly, there is space between those moments. A wellness retreat shouldn’t leave you needing a vacation from your vacation.

Creating More Spaces for Black Men to Rest

Our first Black Men’s Wellness Retreat started as a dream. Watching it come to life confirmed that this experience needed to continue.

We want to create more spaces where Black men can travel, explore wellness, build meaningful connections and experience rest without expectation. Spaces where joy can exist beside vulnerability, adventure beside stillness and brotherhood without performance.

Because transformation doesn’t always arrive as a dramatic breakthrough. Sometimes it is simply deciding that the version of you who takes care of everyone else deserves to be taken care of, too.

Hotel Sages was created to be a sanctuary. This experience reminded us exactly what that word can mean.

Ready to Exhale?

Hotel Sages will continue hosting intentional Black Men’s Wellness Retreats in Bali, bringing together rest, brotherhood, adventure and wellness practices designed to help you reconnect with yourself.
